We’ve Become

Tiny hands would slowly crawl,

a first step only to fall.

With missing teeth and uncombed hair,

Kindergarten taught us all to share.

To stop being little girls and boys,

we put up our dolls and ninja toys.

Family, work, and school we juggled,

and learned from all we struggled.

Success bursting at our seams,

we're reaching for our dreams.

With tearing eyes and smiling faces,

we set out for unknown places.

Sadly looking back we feel numb,

changes show what we’ve become.

(My brother & me goofing off at a very young age)

Frightening monster under the bed,

then we looked to find him dead.

From that glorious, triumphant night,

we slept peacefully, without a fright.

A thousand steep steps made it tall,

we worried of a horrible fall.

Sliding down with a piercing sound,

but exhilarating fun we found.

We’ve conquered the monster and slide,

Now, from our future we cannot hide.

We may still fearfully tremble some,

But in facing our fears, we become.

(8th grade class)

From stickers for being attentive,

to a donut for new incentive,

Patience reflected they did believe,

that many wonders we could achieve.

Teachers taught more than an infinite sum;

they gave us knowledge so we could become.

(Friends on graduation day)

How little our parents were thanked,

for all they praised and spanked.

Instead, we forgot the “please,”

and like angry killer bees,

Contended we had the right,

to drive and stay out all night.

Disobedient and headstrong,

we thought we were never wrong.

Heated punishments full of fuss,

they swore it hurt them more than us.

Yet, their love shaped us to our best,

ready to soar like eagles from the nest.

They’ve loved us every day,

and their children we will stay.

Yes, at times we’ve thought them dumb,

but look what they’ve made us become.

(Dad, Mom, Alex, & Me)

What happens once we’ve gone?

without us, will love move on?

Now whisper sweet nothings in their ear,

together the future seems so unclear.

Last long, tender kiss goodnight,

soon they’ll be out of sight.

Crying, sadly say goodbye,

fearing love will somehow die.

But lets not let our hearts go numb,

continuing love, we will become.

(Halloween 2003)

Growing up to build, act or teach,

our goals aren’t out of reach.

Smart, lively, and easy going,

we continue to grow knowing

That we have become:

unique individuals, ready to grasp

the possibilities of our future.
